Book Review: The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien

We review books.

Sometimes we talk about them too on our podcast

We loved The Hobbit so much we split it into two parts. The first part of our podcast episode discusses the book, the second on the adaptations, and what we thought of them. Have you read this book? Let us know!

Well it is safe to say we all really really enjoyed re-reading this book. Not all of us had read it the first time around, and it was brilliant to gain some of the insight of the widger Legendarium from our host Eli. We split our podcast review into two parts [update 18/4 – Second part out now! See below]

While there are some legitimate issues with the book (e.g. why do all the dwarves have three personalities between them?), this is a classic, and is the godfather of modern epic/high fantasy novels. It was great fun to follow Bilbo on his quest all these years later since reading/being read this book as children!

Podcast Episode

EPISODE 16

In this episode, we discuss the Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien’s beloved book which originated as a bedtime story for his son. Join us for discussion of medievalist tropes, elven culture, and Bilbo’s failed stealth checks.

We had a little issue with M’s audio this time, so despite our best editing efforts there is still a bit of crackling, which we apologise for.

EPISODE 17

In this episode, we discuss our myriad issues with the Peter Jackson adaptations, the wider Middle-Earth legendarium, and the possibility of the Arkenstone being a Silmaril. Join us as we wish for the movies to lower our coffins into our graves when we die, so that they can let us down one last time.

About Teaching my Cat to Read

Teaching my Cat to Read is a book review podcast with a comedic twist. Each episode we pick a book, and discuss it with a selection of funny questions.
If you want to discover who “would win in a fight between Lady Catherine + Mrs Bennett?” or “who gave Victor Frankenstein his grant money for his experiments?”, we’re the podcast for you. Plus, we always ask: “what rating would our cat give this book?”.
