In this mini episode we discuss “The Final Empire” By Brandon Sanderson, which we reviewed in full for series 1 (episode 20).
“The Final Empire” is the first book in the Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson. The book forms part of the wider cosmere of books, which is Brandon Sanderson’s interconnected series of books.
Sanderson started writing the novel whilst trying to get his other novel Elantris published, pausing to focus writing early drafts of the Stormlight Archive series.
The book is set in the world of Scadrial, where ash falls from the sky, all the plants are brown and mists cover the landscape at night. A millennia before the start of the novel, the Hero of Ages defeated the evil known as the Deepness and mankind saved. This Hero became to be known as the “Lord Ruler” and ruled over the world since then. Kelsier, a thief, wishes to overthrow the Lord Ruler, and bring about the collapse of the economy and new leadership. As a Mistborn, Kelsier can “burn” all allomantic metals, giving him access to all allomatic powers from all 10 metals. He finds and takes under his wing a street Urchin called Vin, who he has discovered is a Mistborn, and incorporates her into his thieving crew.
We really enjoyed reading this book for the podcast, it was a great discussion and comparison to The Emperor’s Soul which we had previously read earlier in the series.
