We read “Temeraire: His Majesty’s Dragon” by Naomi Novik, the first book in a series of alternative history novels where the Napoleonic Wars are fought with Dragons. We join Captain Will Laurence as he reluctantly forms a bond with a newly hatched dragon and instantly becomes the “I’ve only had temeraire for a day and a half but if anything happened to him i would kill everyone on this boat and then myself” meme.
If you like the premise go read it, we’ll wait! (Definitely read it.)
We loved this book so much we made it a two parter!
Part 1: The plot
Part 2: A Deeper Dive
Content Warnings
Abuse/neglect of a dragon (dragons are sentient, and the abusive relationship is somewhere between a parent/child or owner/pet situation)
Warfare
Mild Sexism
About Teaching my Cat to Read
Teaching my Cat to Read is a book review podcast with a comedic twist. Each episode we pick a book, and discuss it with a selection of funny questions.
If you want to discover who “would win in a fight between Lady Catherine + Mrs Bennett?” or “who gave Victor Frankenstein his grant money for his experiments?”, we’re the podcast for you. Plus, we always ask: “what rating would our cat give this book?”.
